Best Shipping Scale for Resellers (2026): Buying Checklist and 5 Scales Compared

Short answer: The best shipping scale for a reseller is one that weighs your heaviest packed parcel, reads in small steps (0.1 oz is common), has a tare and a hold button, and has a platform big enough for your boxes. Weighing the sealed package, not the item, is what keeps your label price right and prevents carrier adjustments that come out of your profit.
We haven't lab-tested scales, so this isn't a ranked list. It's a checklist built from what marketplaces and carriers ask you to enter, plus a few examples of scales sold on Amazon whose listings match it. Fee numbers come from our eBay fee calculator (rates checked Oct 25, 2026).
Why do resellers need a shipping scale?
When you buy a label, the price depends on the weight and size you enter. eBay's Packaging and measuring guide lists weight as "the package's weight on a scale" and explains that a shipping label price adjustment happens when the carrier finds the information you gave was inaccurate. The difference is typically charged or credited to your original payment method. Its advice: round weight and dimensions up.
Guessing has two costs:
- Guess low and a carrier adjustment can arrive after the sale, cutting into a profit you thought was final.
- Guess high and you pay for weight you didn't ship on every label, which adds up over a year.
How much does a wrong label cost you?
Here's an example eBay sale, not a real order: a $45 item, $6.50 shipping paid by the buyer, 8% tax, $8 item cost, a $6.20 label and $0.75 in supplies.
| Item price | $45.00 |
| Shipping paid by buyer | $6.50 |
| Buyer sales tax (8%, remitted by eBay) | $4.12 |
| Final value fee | −$7.56 |
| Per-order fee | −$0.40 |
| Total eBay fees | −$7.96 |
| Payout from eBay | $43.54 |
| Item cost | −$8.00 |
| Your shipping label | −$6.20 |
| Other costs | −$0.75 |
| Profit | $28.59 |
The label is the biggest cost after the item. If a heavier-than-entered package triggers an adjustment, that amount comes straight off the $28.59. On a $25 free-shipping item where profit was already around $12, an adjustment matters even more (see how to calculate profit on eBay sales). Estimate your all-in cost per package with the shipping cost calculator.
What should I look for in a shipping scale?
| Feature | Why it matters for reselling |
|---|---|
| Capacity above your heaviest parcel | Boots, small appliances and bundles can be heavy; a 10 lb kitchen scale is too small for many boxes |
| Small increments (e.g. 0.1 oz) | Light parcels often sit near a weight break, so precision helps you pick the right tier |
| Tare | Zero out a tray or box so you can weigh contents, then the full package |
| Hold | Locks the reading when a large box hides the display |
| Platform size | A wide platform keeps a box from overhanging and reading wrong |
| Power options | Batteries for a packing table, an AC adapter for daily use |
| Units | Switching between lb/oz and kg matters if you ship internationally |
Weigh the fully packed, sealed parcel, including the mailer, filler and tape. Then round up.
Do I need to measure dimensions too?
Yes, for boxes. eBay's guide explains that carriers may use dimensional (DIM) weight, charging based on the larger of the box's dimensional calculation or its actual scale weight. A big, light box can cost more than its weight suggests. Measure length, width and height and round up to the nearest inch, as eBay recommends. Choosing a poly mailer instead of a box for soft goods often avoids the problem.
Example scales that fit the checklist
These are examples, not a ranking. We haven't lab-tested them; the details below come from each Amazon listing's title, bullets and spec table, checked Oct 25, 2026. Where a listing contradicts itself, we say so. Check the current price and specs on Amazon before you buy.
| Scale | Max weight (per listing) | Steps (per listing) | Hold / tare | Power (per listing) | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accuteck 86 lb | 86 lb | 0.1 oz | Yes / Yes | Batteries + AC adapter | Mailers through heavier boxes |
| Fuzion 86 lb | 86 lb | 0.1 oz | Yes / Yes | Batteries, AC adapter or USB power | Similar listed specs, flip-up platform |
| MUNBYN 66 lb | 66 lb | 0.1 oz | Yes / Yes | AAA batteries or AC adapter | Small packing tables, mostly mailers |
| DYMO M25 | 25 lb | Not stated in the bullets | Yes / Yes | 3 AAA (not included) or USB | A desk where you buy postage on a computer |
| Amazon Basics 660 lb | 660 lb | Listing conflicts (see below) | Tare only | AAA, USB power or AC | Heavy, bulky boxes only |
- Accuteck 86 lb digital shipping postal scale (model W-8260-86). The listing title says 86 lb capacity in 0.1 oz steps, with tare, hold, batteries and an AC adapter. One spec row and part of the description say 50 lb, which doesn't match the title, so check the version you pick. Platform dimensions aren't listed.
- Fuzion digital postal scale, 86 lb / 0.1 oz (model PS1-B). The listing title says 86 lb / 0.1 oz, hold and tare, with a battery and AC adapter included, and describes a flip-up platform for irregular items. Platform dimensions aren't listed.
- MUNBYN 66 lb postal scale (the linked listing is the pink version). The listing describes 66 lb in 0.1 oz steps, hold, tare and a counting (PCS) mode, a flip-up lid for envelopes and tubes, and an overall size of about 9.65 x 6.06 x 1.81 in. It says items under 5 g can't be measured, which won't matter for packed parcels. The bullets list AAA batteries, an AC adapter and a ruler, but the "what's in the box" row lists a USB cable instead, so check before you rely on AC power.
- DYMO M25 digital postal scale (model 1772059). The listing describes 25 lb capacity, tare, a hold that keeps the reading for 10 seconds, auto-off, and a USB connection to online mailing and shipping services, including DYMO Stamps. Batteries aren't included. The 25 lb maximum is low for heavy boxes. We couldn't confirm that eBay's own label tool reads weight from a USB scale, so plan to type the weight in when you buy labels on eBay.
- Amazon Basics 660 lb digital shipping scale (pick the 660 lb size on the listing). It lists a 660 lb capacity, an 11.81 x 11.81 in platform, a separate backlit display that stays readable under a big box, and tare. The listing gives a minimum load of 6 oz in one place and 10 oz in another, so it can't weigh light mailers, and its title says "1 Ounce Readability" while a bullet says 0.1 oz increments. It suits sellers of heavy items such as auto parts or small appliances, not clothing.
Check the platform dimensions on each listing against your largest box. We left out listings that contradicted themselves on capacity, one marked "wholesale only", and luggage scales, which aren't made for weighing parcels.
Pair it with a label printer
A scale fixes the weight; a thermal printer removes ink and tape from every label. If you're shopping for one, our thermal label printer guide covers 4x6 labels, direct thermal paper and phone printing, and there's a version for eBay sellers. One example:
- Rollo Wireless 4x6 thermal shipping label printer. The listing describes Wi-Fi printing with AirPrint from iPhone, iPad and Mac, plus Windows, Chromebook and Android support.

Is a shipping scale a business expense?
If reselling is your business, equipment like a scale or label printer is generally a business cost. See the reseller tax deductions checklist for IRS sources, and talk to a tax professional about your situation.
Put the label cost in your numbers
The real label cost belongs in your buy decision, not just in your shipping settings. Use it in the max buy price calculator before you source, and log it per sale in the Fliprofit Profit Tracker so adjustments and supply costs show up in your monthly profit.

FAQ
What size shipping scale does a reseller need?
One whose capacity is above your heaviest packed parcel. Many postal scales sold for shipping list capacities well above kitchen scales, such as 86 lb. If you ship clothing in mailers, precision at light weights matters more than a very high maximum.
Can I use a kitchen scale for shipping?
For light mailers, a kitchen scale can work if it reads the full packed weight and has tare. It may be too small for boxes or top out at a low weight. Whatever you use, weigh the sealed parcel and round up.
What happens if I enter the wrong weight on an eBay label?
eBay says a shipping label price adjustment can happen when the carrier finds the information you provided was inaccurate. The difference is typically charged or credited to the original payment method.
Do I need to measure packages as well as weigh them?
For boxes, yes. Carriers may charge by dimensional weight when it's higher than the actual weight. eBay recommends rounding each dimension up to the nearest inch.
Does eBay connect to a USB shipping scale?
We couldn't confirm that eBay's label tool reads weight from a USB scale. The DYMO M25 listing says it connects to online mailing and shipping services such as DYMO Stamps. On eBay, plan to weigh the sealed package and type the weight in.
Is 0.1 oz precision enough for shipping?
For most parcels, yes. Precision matters most for light mailers near a weight break, where rounding the wrong way changes the label price. Weigh the sealed package and round up, as eBay recommends.
Can I use a 660 lb scale for small packages?
Usually not for the lightest ones. The Amazon Basics 660 lb listing gives a minimum load of 6 oz in one place and 10 oz in another, and its precision is unclear because the title and bullets disagree. Heavy-duty scales suit bulky boxes; a desktop postal scale suits mailers.
