Each platform uses its default fee settings (standard category, no ads or boosts). For category or ad options, open that platform's calculator.

Worked example

An item sells for $60 on eBay with free shipping. The label costs $8 and the mailer $1. eBay's fees at the standard rate are $8.56, so $42.44 is left before you pay for the item.

  • For a $15 profit: $42.44 − $15 = $27.44
  • For a 100% ROI: $42.44 ÷ 2 = $21.22

The lower number, $21.22, meets both targets. Pay more than that and you miss at least one of them.

How it works

Fees come from the same engine as each platform fee calculator, using default settings (standard category, no ads or boosts). On Poshmark the buyer pays Poshmark for a prepaid label, so the shipping you enter is ignored for that row. For pallets and lots, use the pallet profit calculator.

FAQ

How do I calculate the most I should pay for something to resell?

Start with the realistic sale price, subtract the platform's fees, your shipping label and supplies. That's what's left before item cost. For a dollar profit target, subtract the target. For an ROI target, divide by (1 + ROI). The lower of the two is your max buy price.

What is a good ROI for reselling?

There is no official number. Many resellers set a minimum profit in dollars per item so small items are still worth the listing and shipping time, plus an ROI floor so cheap items don't tie up cash for little return. Pick targets that fit your time and storage.

Do fees change with what I paid for the item?

No. Marketplace fees are charged on the sale (and sometimes shipping and tax), not on your cost. That is why the max buy price can be worked backwards exactly.

Why is the max buy different on each platform?

Each marketplace takes a different cut. With the same $60 sale, eBay's default fees are $8.56 while other platforms charge more or less. Platform fees were checked October 24, 2026.
