Whatnot Seller Fees Explained (2026): Commission, Processing and the New Tiers

Short answer: a standard US Whatnot seller pays two fees per sale: an 8% commission on the item price (4% for Coins & Money), plus 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing on the buyer's total, which includes shipping and sales tax. On a $50 card sold with $5 shipping and 8% tax, that's $4.00 + $2.02 = $6.02. Since September 21, 2026, sellers with higher sales in a four-week period unlock lower commission rates, down to 6.5% for cards and sports, 4.5% for fashion and 4% for "Other." Processing doesn't change.

Every number here comes from our Whatnot fee calculator, using the rates on Whatnot's official seller fees page (checked October 24, 2026).

The two Whatnot fees

Fee Rate (US) Charged on
Commission 8% standard (4% Coins & Money); lower at higher tiers Item sale price only. Shipping and tax are not included
Payment processing 2.9% + $0.30 per order Buyer's total: item + buyer-paid shipping + sales tax

Whatnot stresses that commission is charged on gross merchandise value (the item price), not the full transaction. Its own example: a $10 item with $4.99 shipping and $0.85 tax pays an 8% commission of $0.80, which is less than a 6% fee on the whole $15.84 would be. Processing is different. It's charged on everything the buyer pays, which is why it can be close to half of your total Whatnot fees on cheap items.

Worked example: a $50 trading card

You sell a card for $50 in a live show. The buyer pays $5 shipping (which covers the label) and 8% sales tax. You paid $20 for the card.

Example: Whatnot sale, calculated with the Whatnot fee calculator
Item price$50.00
Shipping paid by buyer$5.00
Buyer sales tax (8%, remitted by Whatnot)$4.40
Commission (8% of item price)−$4.00
Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 of buyer total)−$2.02
Total Whatnot fees−$6.02
Payout from Whatnot$48.98
Item cost−$20.00
Your shipping label−$5.00
Profit$23.98
  • Commission: 8% × $50 = $4.00
  • Processing: 2.9% × $59.40 + $0.30 = $2.02
  • Total Whatnot fees: $6.02 (12% of the item price)
  • Profit after the $20 card and the buyer-paid label: $23.98

The same $50 card on eBay, with the same shipping and tax, costs about $8.92 in fees (13.6% of the total plus $0.40). You can check that in the eBay fee calculator.

The 2026 tiered commission rates (US)

Since September 21, 2026, your total sales across all categories in a four-week (28-day) period set your tier for the next period. Your rate is then charged by the category of each show (live) or product (marketplace).

Category Standard $0–$14,999 Tier 1 $15k+ Tier 2 $35k+ Tier 3 $50k+ Tier 4 $100k+ Tier 5 $250k+ Tier 6 $500k+
Sports 8% 7.75% 7.5% 7.25% 7% 6.75% 6.5%
Trading card games 8% 7.75% 7.5% 7.25% 7% 6.75% 6.5%
Fashion 8% 7% 6.5% 5.5% 5% 4.5% 4.5%
Other collectibles 8% 7.25% 6.5% 6% 5% 5% 5%
Coins & money 4% 3.9% 3.8% 3.7% 3.6% 3.55% 3.5%
Other 8% 7% 6.5% 5.5% 4% 4% 4%

How much does a tier actually save? For the $50 card above, commission drops from $4.00 at Standard to $3.88 at Tier 1, $3.63 at Tier 3 and $3.25 at Tier 6. Processing stays at $2.02 at every tier. In fashion the gap is bigger: on a $200 item with $5 shipping and 8% tax, total fees fall from $22.72 at Standard to $17.72 at Tier 3 (5.5%).

Tier rules worth knowing

  • Your rate is locked for the whole period. Crossing a threshold lowers your rate starting next period, not right away.
  • Every period starts from zero. Sales don't carry over between four-week windows.
  • What doesn't count: private shows, local pickup orders and cancelled orders are subtracted from your total.
  • Promotional rates (for example new-seller 0% promos) override your tier while they run, and those sales still count toward your next tier.
  • The "as low as 3%" headline refers to custom rates for the very largest sellers who work with an account manager. You can't apply for it.
  • Premier Shop: through October 31, 2026, the Premier Shop 10% commission discount still applies on top of your tier rate (5% becomes 4.5%). Starting November 1, Premier Shop no longer includes a commission discount.
  • Category must match what you sell. Listing in a lower-rate category to save fees counts as fee avoidance under Whatnot's policies.

Why small Whatnot sales feel expensive

The $0.30 fixed processing fee doesn't shrink with the price. On a $1 card in a "$1 start" auction with $4.99 shipping and 8% tax, the fees are only $0.57, but that's 57% of the $1 hammer price. Bundle small items, or set a starting price that covers your cost plus about $0.60.

Whatnot fees vs. other platforms

On a plain $50 sale (item price only, no shipping or tax, standard US rates):

Platform Fees You keep
Whatnot (8% + 2.9% + $0.30) $5.75 $44.25
eBay (13.6% + $0.40) $7.20 $42.80
Mercari (10%) $5.00 $45.00
Poshmark (20%) $10.00 $40.00

Whatnot's fees are among the lowest for collectibles, and the live-auction format can push prices up. See every platform for your own sale in the comparison tool.
